Built for Generations: Inside The ABS Quality Process

In the early 2000s, a team of professional metal fabricators from Olathe, Kansas, took a trip to visit friends competing in the legendary American Royal World Series of Barbecue. Looking closely at the rigs on the field, they noticed a major problem: mass-produced pits leaked heat, warped under intense temperatures, and lacked precision control.

They knew that with their metalworking expertise, they could build something better.

Led by Mark Hillman, that group launched American Barbecue Systems (ABS) in 2006 with a singular, bold vision: to create the world’s best barbecue smokers. Today, nearly 20 years later, ABS has gained a cult following across the country by forging handcrafted American made steel smokers that are built to last for generations.

Cult Following. Champion Proven.

We don’t just claim our smokers are better—the proof is at the judges’ tables and in the busiest kitchens in the country:

  • The Competitors: Championship teams like 913 Barbecue and Abs of Squeal have taken home prestigious American Royal accolades cooking on an ABS.
  • The Restaurants: Renowned Kansas City institutions like Meat Mitch and Hayward’s Pit Bar B Que depend on ABS smokers every single day to feed thousands of hungry restaurant guests.
  • The Legends: Even local sports icons know quality. Insider sources claim Kansas City baseball legend George Brett uses a custom, stainless-steel ABS Pit Boss™ as his personal go-to backyard cooker.

Inside the Shop: Our 4-Phase Quality Standard

Every single ABS unit is designed, fabricated, assembled, and inspected by hand at our facility in Olathe, Kansas. We do not outsource our work, and we don’t build disposable appliances. Here is the strict, hands-on process every smoker goes through before it receives the ABS badge of approval.

Phase 1: Heavy-Duty Structural Fitment

Every smoker begins as flat sheets of premium, thick-gauge American steel. Our fabrication team carefully aligns and integrates every panel, door, and frame. Unlike big-box store models that arrive flat-packed in cardboard boxes with hundreds of cheap screws, our smokers are built as solid, fully fused structural units that can handle the brutal thermal stress of overnight low-and-slow cooks.

Phase 2: The Airtight Seal Test

A smoker is only as good as its insulation. If smoke leaks out of the doors, you lose temperature control, ruin your bark, and waste fuel. We inspect every door seating, hinge, and heavy-duty latch by hand. We ensure that when you close your ABS smoker, it creates a true airtight seal that forces clean smoke to travel exactly where it’s supposed to—seamlessly over your meat and out the exhaust stack.

Phase 3: Rotisserie Balancing & Mechanical Run

For our best-selling models like The Pit Boss™ and The Judge, the automated stainless steel rotisserie system is what delivers cooking perfection. Before a rotisserie model is cleared to ship, we install the racks and run the motor through a live mechanical test. We listen for absolute silence and look for fluid, friction-free rotation to ensure it will turn flawlessly hour after hour under a heavy meat load.

Phase 4: Searing Versatility Tuning

One of the most unique engineering features of an ABS smoker is its true versatility. On our most popular units, we configure the back of the machine so you can grill or sear on grates directly over the firebox—without having to adjust or remove any internal components during the cooking process. We double-check these multi-damper configurations so you can transition from low-and-slow smoking to high-heat flame searing instantly.

Built by Barbecue People, For Barbecue People

“It was initially just a concept that we wanted to create the world’s best barbecue smokers. We ended up developing a product that is more versatile, easier to operate and clean, holds temperatures better in all weather conditions and is built to last for generations.” — Mark Hillman, Founder

We don’t take shortcuts because we cook on these rigs ourselves. If a weld isn’t clean, if a door doesn’t seal tightly, or if a damper doesn’t slide smoothly, it simply does not leave our floor.

Whether you are a backyard warrior looking at the versatile All-Star, a caterer eyeing the automated Pit Boss, or a commercial kitchen looking at the high-capacity Smokehouse, you are investing in a piece of authentic American craftsmanship designed to deliver perfection every time you light the fire.

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Rigs

Are premium American-made smokers worth the investment?

For anyone who regularly smokes meat or demands consistent, championship-quality results, a premium smoker is well worth the investment. While the upfront cost is higher than a mass-produced retail model, ABS smokers are built with heavy-gauge American steel, durable welds, and long-term performance in mind. Over time, owners spend significantly less on repairs and replacements while enjoying vastly superior barbecue on every single cook.

Does thicker steel really make a difference when smoking meat?

Yes, it makes an immense difference. Thicker steel holds and retains cooking temperatures consistently, recovers heat much faster after you open the lid, and uses fuel far more efficiently during long, overnight cooks. This massive “thermal battery” insulation minimizes temperature fluctuations caused by sudden cold weather, wind, or rain, allowing you to spend less time managing the fire.

How long should an American Barbecue Systems smoker last?

With proper care and simple routine maintenance, an ABS smoker is engineered to provide decades of dependable service. Unlike lower-cost big-box retail grills that degrade and are treated as disposable appliances, our premium pits are built for long-term ownership and are designed to be passed down as heirlooms to the next generation of family pitmasters.
